Sony A77ii
Minolta 200mm macro
ISO 200, 1/80 @ f4
Spotted this newly opened BoP this morning and immediately saw a little bird demanding food. This first shot is at f4 and the alternative in the first comment is at f32. I like the isolation of the POF on the first but like some of the supporting details on the second. I generally don't like FG OOF elements but on the first I thought it was OOF enough to not be distraction. Your opinions and comments please. >=))>

I like both of them, Bill, but prefer the f/32 version.  The foreground yellow petal is smooth enough that it doesn't compete with the "bird", so it works for me.  On the f/4 version, there's just a little slice of that foreground petal that's in sharp focus and it's kind of jarring to my eye and draws attention away from the bird.

By the way, how did you manage to find that little dew drop in the perfect place to simulate the bird's eye?  It's utterly amazing.

Dennis: Pure unadulterated good fortune. I'm not sure I would have called this a bird without the drop. What's the old saying? "I'd rather be lucky than good!" . . Bill

I had to look at it several times to make up my mind, but I like the f 32 version best.  I agree about the isolation in the first but the contrast between the "bird" and the orange behind it does a good job of isolating the bird too.  The detail in the second is very good an does not detract at all.  Very cool find and well executed!

Bill, when a flower is wholly beautiful I prefer a fully detailed image; when a part of it is much more interesting of the rest I like better a softer photo. This said for explaining why I love much more the second version because this flower is entirely splendid specially when newly opened.

Hi Bill, the second shot does it for me ... with a nice level of detail in front of and behind the bird without being distracting and a more gentle blur going top left ... nice!

I agree with the others about preferring the f32 version.  You can see a lot more detail and still see the little bird right away.  This is very cool!

Another vote here for the stopped down version, Bill. Splendid form and colors.

Definitely prefer the f32 version. The OOF foreground wound up being a distraction for me. What I admire, though, is how you consistently find balance in a totally partial view.cool
