Juvenile Junco

Dark-eyed Junco.  For some reason juveniles of a lot of species have little hesitation about using a bath or pond.  Every time I'm out in the blind I see a couple of young Juncos using it.  This one was just coming into it and stopped on a relatively large rock on the back edge.

The image is a touch tighter than I would have liked but I had some sun seeping through that caught dead grass on both edges and I just couldn't subdue it in processing, so I ended up cropping a bit to get rid of it.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, tripod with ballhead and Wimberley Sidekick, f/8, 1/400, iso 1250, manual exposure.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 13.5 MP before resizing.  Taken June 7th at 4:01 pm.

Your comments and criticisms are really appreciated.

Thanks,

The tight composition is fine with me. Excellent detail in the junco. I've only seen a juvie once - there was a small breeding spot at the northern NJ.

A fine image overall.

A nice, detailed look at the young junco in a pleasant setting. You're getting some good shots from your blind.

I have also had a few juvenile Juncos spending time in my yard.  I missed an opportunity to get the mother feeding the baby but now they are feeding on their own.  They do seem to be fairly bold.  Despite the tightness here I like the image because of the perch.  The grays on the perch mirror the grays on the bird.  Good environmental composition.

It is really nice to see this juvie, Dennis. Juncos only winter here, so we never get to see juvies. Excellent detail in that subdued light and that rock makes an awesome perch. I think the comp works out just fine.

Oh, this is really a nice shot, Dennis.  I am not familiar with this breed of bird (guess they are from the west, and I have always lived in the east), but the detail in this is really good, with perfect lighting as well.

Thank you for the identification. We have many juncos here, and I have seen, but not realized, juveniles. Always thought they were some type of sparrow or finch. Now I know. The image: I like the tight image. Techs are great.
