I took this shot last September using my Canon Mark III and Canon 100-400mm L lens with extension tube (can't remember, but I believe it was 21mm), handheld, settings at f5.6, 1/800, ISO 400.  Comments and suggestions welcome.  You all are awesome, I have received some very good advice so far.  I have joined up for a 3 year commitment here!

Hi Shirley,

There's a lot one can learn from examining a good bug photo.  In this case, the bumblebee is gathering nectar as you can see her tongue lapping up nectar in your picture.   I would go for a tighter crop and lower the saturation of the yellows as they are a bit too hot.  Dslr's are notorious for producing yellows that are too rich.  Other than those suggestions, the bumblebee is tack sharp and you captured a good piece of natural history.......................Jim

Shirley, the analogous color scheme (green and yellow) works very well here.  I'm with Jim wishing for a tighter view of the bee and her flower.  That, however, would be a very different picture in terms of the story that it tells.  To me, this view works well in showing off the bee while putting her in the context of an extended flower patch and the quiet joy of watching the bees work.  It's good to have you thoroughly involved and I expect that the other members (including myself) will learn from you as you learn from us.  I think you'll find that three years will pass quickly.

You have a fine image of the bee in its environment, Shirely. I like the full frame colors. I think a tighter crop would work, but that would really be a different image altogether.

Hi  Shirleycrying        I  like  the composition as is..    except  for a  tighter crop  on the bottom.  the bee  is well  posed, and the  colors  are  very  natural, and the detail  is  good

I didn't see this until after I posted mine but it's obviously very similar!  I like the inclusion of the environment also but I think you could take a little bit off the bottom and left side to minimize the dominance of the mass of flowers at the bottom.
