Parsley Muncher

My lab tech was complaining about some caterpillars that were devouring his parsley plants.  He brought one in and I hope to rear this one to the adult stage. Some species of swallowtails can be agricultural pests and the black swallowtail is known to specialize on members of the carrot family as a larval food source.  K5 IIs 180 mm f3.5  + fill flash at -2.67 ev (1/25 sec at f14, ISO 250) Levels, brightness & Contrast, full frame.

How neat, Jim, I was just out photographing one of these in my yard munching on some Queen Anne's Lace.  I'm guessing that they're about the same size (mine was a bit over an inch long, in a pose like this).  You've got great details here and a well coordinated background.  Now to process my shots...cool

This is an enviable image, Jim.  For me this punches all the right buttons for macro work: Interesting subject, careful DOF control, lighting and clean soft BG.  Your focus on the whole animal is impeccable and good work with the fill flash.  Just curious, since you have such a nice soft BG, I'm wondering if backing off a bit to include the whole plant would improve what is already an excellent presentation.  Maybe the upper RH branch was too long ?  Hard to know.  All the same a beautifully executed image on many levels.

I really like this shot, Jim! Everything works in concert here.  The composition is just right in my opinion, the detail is excellent, the exposure couldn't be better and the soft color coordinated background is the icing on the cake.  Excellent image! devil
