Autumn Carnival
by Mattia Oliviero
In Autumn, it is really hard for me to carry all my feelings in a single image. Too many colors and shapes. Thus I tried something different and in a way simpler. For this image I was attracted especially by the graphic effect of the branches and by the leaves as a sort of confetti. As always comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

7 commentsI must say that I'm having a similar reaction as I did to Peter's recent post of "Autumn Impression." At first glance one might think, blurry leaves? washed out sky, really? But the moment I read your comment about "confetti," I thought, of course! It's clear now that from inception to capture and processing, you have created something different, and I think very effective. The very narrow depth of focus shows the middle-ground leaves in focus, but the ones up front are clearly not and I think you've enhanced that in post?
I'm trying to think of a crop that might enhance your vision, but then I think that the open, airy-ness of the top and right are really important and help convey that concept of confetti.
I think sometimes we as photographers and appreciators of the art need to step back and "see" more openly.
I think you've accomplished your goal with this one.

No particular processing was applied to this image, I only lightened a bit the leaves. I decided in the field to overexpose the sky to make it white. I also considered a crop as Lon suggested but I was concerned about the balance of the image. The main reason for considering the crop is exactly the blurry diagonal branch which is more blurry because I think it is closer to me since I focused on the furthest branches. I will definitely try again and looking a little bit more upwards during my hikes, maybe it will be a worthy photographic project.
