</div> <div>Some Hooded Mergansers are taking advantage of recent warm temperatures to get at fish that have been protected by ice for months.  Despite above-freezing temperatures, it's been snowing a lot, so I was trying to shoot between the snowflakes in the air.  This was one of the lucky shots.

Canon 7D Mark II; Sigma 150-600 C
1/125 sec. @ f/8; ISO 640
Tripod with Acratech GP Ballhead in gimbal mode
45% of full frame
Note:  Somebody with a bright monitor is bound to say the white crest is overexposed, but the histogram and the full-size image show there it detail there.  I did not want to make it look less white than it really is.

Lucky or not, it is a superb image. I have no problem with the white crest. Looks just fine to me.

Wayne, Beautiful bird in a great environment. The crest looks perfectly-exposed to me, with excellent detail.
Really fine image!

Cool bird Wayne and I like the included snow fall.  The crest looks fine to me also. I like your choice for the comp too, well done!

That's pretty cool, Wayne, and chilly too. The whites look just fine to me. I try to shoot lots of my shore birds in retreat while looking back, and this works nicely with the vivid yellow eye.

Superb detail, Wayne.  I like the snow flakes as they add a lot of context to the image.
