Got that Itch!
by Dennis Plank
I was out the other evening and noticed that the hummingbirds were using one of our Hawthorns as a frequent perch, so I positioned myself near it. Unfortunately, when this lady landed the only line of visibility was at just about exactly 90 degrees to the sun. However, I decided to try some shots regardless and when she stretched her neck out and started scratching, I fired off a burst. While the focus on this was right about on the lifted leg, thus making the face slightly soft and the tipof hte beak noticeably so, I liked it for the clear view of the scratching foot. I think this is the first time I've ever gotten one that wasn't very much motion blurred. It's hard to believe that a bird that normally looks like it has no legs at all can reach up like that.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 516 mm, hand held, f/8, 1/1600, iso 1600, aperture priority, pattern metering, +2/3 EV. Processed in LR & PS CC. I used some of Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks on the bird to help reduce the shadow contrast and finished it off with some local adjustments in Lightroom.
