Moon Light Night

by Josh Anderson

Gallery: LandscapePosted March 17, 20081,756 views29 comments
This image was cropped to a square format due to a bright, distracting moon shining thru the top of the tree.

40D
17-85mm IS USM @17mm
ISO 100
f/11 @ 10 min.
Raw

C&C welcome.

Some of you have seen this image before the crop. Actually, many suggested it.

Thanks

~JA

After posting, I noticed some artifacts in the sky. They are the result of saving the image at such a low quality. The artifacts do not appear in the original file.

This is exquisite!!!! The idea is excellent - I am not too sure about how this could best be cropped but this is really special. Next time I won't pass up those moonlight shadows.

I love the cropped version, Josh. The warm tones on the horizon add just the right amount of color.

Mysteriously beautiful and engaging image, Josh. The snow makes the whole thing work for me.

Beautiful! I have been trying to capture Sum sparkles on the snow, and you seem to have found that the secret is bounce lighting -- bouncing the Sun off the Moon! The darkness of the snowy slope is perfect to capture those tiny reflections. Looks like you were trying to shoot the moon, and made the bold move of cropping it out to focus on the rest of this superb scene. Excellent crop!

The cropped version looks great. The foreground shadows are excellent and the rocks on the side of the tree adds a great dimension to the composition. Oustanding image.

Great shot Josh, one of your best night/long exposure shots I have seen on NPN. I wonder if you have any compositions focussing on the shadows on the snow...

Pure magic! I love the way those stones anchor both sides of the tree and that glistening snow and shadows take the cake. Very creative work!

Josh,

This is spectacular. I recall the other version and the only thing that bothered me there was the elongated moon. This one here is very captivating. The shadows and snow, the boulders on either side of the tree and of course the tree come together in one beautiful image.

A minor nit for me would be the jet trail (or is that a star trail?) on the left edge just above center. While it doesn't diminish the impact, I think it could be cloned out. I think it also extends/reappears at the top of the frame as well.

Awesome imagery!
